How Healing the Fearful Avoidant Attachment Style Changed My Life

How Healing the Fearful Avoidant Attachment Style Changed My Life

After years of living with the fearful avoidant attachment style, I can say with all my heart that healing has completely transformed my life. I often get questions about what this healing journey has truly brought me, and while I talk about it a lot, I’ve never shared in detail just how much has changed. If you’re wondering what’s possible for you, I hope my story gives you hope and a glimpse of what’s waiting on the other side of healing.

Healing Isn’t Black and White

First, I want to be clear: “healed” isn’t a black and white term. Your fear brain might want it to be—thinking, “When I’m healed, everything will be perfect.” That’s not how it works. Life isn’t suddenly perfect, but it’s about 95% easier, better, and more joyful. There are so many little things, so many areas of my life that have been impacted by both the fearful avoidant attachment style and by healing it. I’ve noticed changes everywhere, and I want to share a few of the most important ones with you.

The End of Constant Fear

One of the most profound changes is that I’m simply not scared anymore. That doesn’t mean I never feel fear, but even in tough times, I don’t get that overwhelming sense of “what if it all goes wrong?” I’m not afraid of people’s reactions, of someone getting angry at me, of making mistakes, or of something bad happening in the future. The constant fear that used to be with me every day is just gone. The calm and freedom that brings is something I never expected. I didn’t realize how much fear had kept me small and restricted, stopping me from truly living. Not being scared anymore feels so freeing and amazing—I wish I could give you just a taste of it.

Embracing Connection

Another beautiful change is that I now love feeling connection. As I healed, I allowed myself to experience connection more and more. Connection is something you can always keep growing, deepening, and strengthening. Looking back, during my fearful avoidant “crash state,” I never really experienced true connection—I didn’t allow myself to. I would stop it before it even started. Now, I am so grateful I healed, because connecting with others is a core human need. When there’s trauma or a wound around connection, it impacts us deeply. As you heal and allow more connection, you’ll notice how fulfilling and natural it feels. I almost can’t imagine not allowing it now, or being so scared to let it in.

True Calm and Peace

My body and mind now feel calm, peaceful, and relaxed. During my fearful avoidant crash state, I realized I had never truly experienced relaxation. When I healed something, I’d notice a whole new level of calm that I’d never felt before. What I thought was relaxation before was really just relief from anxiety, not true peace. Your natural state is love and peace. If you think your natural state is anxiety and stress, that’s trauma speaking—it’s not who you truly are. When you heal, you’ll realize that anxiety never felt natural, just familiar. Now, my body works more optimally, my mind is peaceful, and I don’t feel the need to react to everything. Life no longer feels like a minefield where I could get triggered at any moment.

From War Zone to Contentment

Ten or twelve years ago, my mind was a war zone. I’d lie in bed at night, unable to sleep, with thoughts screaming at me to break up, to do things differently, telling me I was a horrible person. Nothing I did could quiet those voices. Now, my thoughts are mostly happy and grateful. Of course, I still get a fearful thought now and then, but it’s nothing compared to before. I’d say 80-90% of my thoughts are now positive, whereas before, 99.9% were negative and focused on what was missing or what could go wrong. I don’t have to work constantly to maintain this—it’s a combination of releasing trauma, healing beliefs and wounds, and practicing positive thinking until it became automatic.

You Don’t Have to Fight Forever

I want you to know you don’t have to fight forever. Healing the fearful avoidant attachment style isn’t easy, but it’s not something you’ll have to battle for the rest of your life. You will reach a point where it just clicks, and you realize you really are healed. Things will still come up, but you’ll see them differently. You won’t see yourself as broken, and happy thoughts will come much more naturally. I so wish that for you.

Pride, Strength, and Self-Worth

Looking back, my healing journey has taught me so much about myself, life, and others. I’m proud of how far I’ve come and feel strong in who I am. That strength comes from what I’ve overcome and my choice to heal. There were so many moments when it would have been easier to fall back into old patterns, to settle for relationships that mirrored my past. But I knew that would never be fulfilling. I’m grateful to my younger self for choosing to keep going, even when I believed I was too broken or it was too late. I wish I could go back and tell her: “This is where you’ll end up. Just keep going. You are already so valuable, even if you can’t see it yet.”

Freedom, Joy, and Deep Enjoyment

This healing has brought me so much more than just freedom from trauma. There isn’t much that fazes me now, especially when it comes to emotions and feelings. I know what I need and deserve, and I stand strong in that. Now, I get to enjoy my life deeply. It feels normal now, but I don’t take it for granted. Life used to feel like a battle every day, and now I simply enjoy it. This is how it’s supposed to be. It’s your birthright to feel good and to enjoy life. There is so much goodness and beauty in the world that you deserve to experience, right now, exactly as you are. If you don’t allow it, it’s only because something about it feels scary due to the fearful avoidant attachment style. I know how hard it was, and I know how good it can be. You can feel this good, too—even if it feels miles away right now.
