The Power of Releasing Feelings: A Key to Deep Emotional Healing
Welcome, I’m Paulien, and I’m so glad you’re here. Today, I want to explore something that can truly transform your healing journey—releasing a specific feeling. While we often talk about healing the fearful avoidant attachment style as a whole, it’s important to recognize the immense impact that letting go of just one particular feeling can have on your life.
Why Do Feelings Hold So Much Power?
Feelings can have a powerful hold over us. Often, what we’re most afraid of happening in our lives isn’t the event itself, but the feelings we imagine it will bring. It’s fascinating how the same situation can evoke completely different emotions in different people. For example, some people are terrified of public speaking and may even experience panic attacks at the thought, while others love it and feel energized by the experience. This shows that it’s not the event, but the specific feeling we associate with it, that shapes our experience.
When you find yourself resisting a certain feeling, it’s usually because of the negative consequences you associate with it. Even emotions we label as “negative” are just feelings—they don’t have to be something we resist or fear. But when a feeling feels overwhelming, like the fear of rejection or abandonment, it can seem impossible to face. These feelings can trigger intense reactions, like wanting to run away or shutting down emotionally.
Transforming Your Relationship with Difficult Feelings
Think about the fear of rejection or abandonment. When you consider these possibilities, a sensation likely arises in your body—maybe a tightness in your chest, a lump in your throat, or a queasy feeling in your stomach. Depending on your past experiences and associations, these sensations can range from mildly uncomfortable to completely overwhelming.
But here’s the good news: it is possible to reach a place where even these difficult feelings become neutral. Imagine being able to say, “Yes, rejection could happen, but it’s okay.” You might not be able to picture that right now, but it truly is possible. When you release the fear of a particular feeling, you also release the power it has over you. The event—like being rejected—might still happen, but it won’t trigger the same emotional response. For many with a fearful avoidant attachment style, this is the key to freedom.
Freedom Lies in Releasing, Not Controlling
Many fearful avoidants try to control their environment to avoid triggering feelings like rejection or abandonment. But this isn’t true freedom—it’s a form of control that can even become obsessive. Real freedom comes from knowing that you can handle whatever feelings arise, no matter what happens. Life stops feeling like a minefield, and you no longer have to live in fear of your own emotions. The world doesn’t change, but your experience of it does.
Why Talk Therapy Isn’t Always Enough
While talk therapy can be incredibly valuable, it often doesn’t address the emotional charge around certain themes or topics. You might talk through your fear of rejection, explore your past, and try to reframe your thoughts, which can help lessen your fear. But sometimes, the emotional intensity remains.
It’s also possible to completely release the fear of a feeling. This is where techniques like Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), or tapping, can be so powerful. By focusing on the physical sensations and allowing them to be present, you can begin to let go of the emotional charge.
How to Release the Fear of Rejection with Tapping
If you’re new to EFT, I recommend learning the basics first. But if you’re familiar with tapping, you can follow along with this simple process. Please be mindful—if the fear of rejection feels too overwhelming, it’s okay to wait and approach this more gradually, perhaps with guidance or in a structured program.
Here’s a gentle tapping script you can use:
- Even though I’m so scared of rejection, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.
- Even though I don’t want to be rejected, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.
- Even though I don’t want to feel the fear of rejection, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.
Notice where you feel the fear in your body—maybe your chest, throat, or stomach. Focus on these sensations and allow them to be present. Remind yourself: “They are just sensations. They can’t hurt me. I am more than my feelings. I am bigger than my feelings.”
As you allow yourself to feel these sensations, you may notice the fear beginning to lessen. The feeling becomes less overwhelming, and you realize it’s just a sensation—something you can handle. This is the essence of emotional freedom.
Lasting Change Is Possible
Sometimes, it takes several rounds of tapping—or even a few hours—to release a deeply rooted feeling. But once you release it, the impact is lasting. The fear no longer has power over you, and you’re free to live, love, and connect without being held back by old emotional patterns.
Your freedom doesn’t come from controlling every aspect of your life or avoiding difficult feelings. True freedom comes from releasing the power those feelings have over you. It’s easier than you might think, and the transformation is profound. Even if you don’t change your beliefs or do anything else, simply releasing these feelings can shift the way you think, speak, and act—often without you even realizing it.
This is the beautiful, freeing experience I wish for you. If you’re interested in a step-by-step approach to releasing core feelings and healing your fearful avoidant attachment style, you can find more information in my online program, Healed & Happy.
